Grenville Davey
THE ESTATE OF GRENVILLE DAVEY, 1961-2022.
Grenville Davey's relationship to the natural world challenged the widely anthropocentric view. He honoured inanimate objects too, bringing them to life simply by noticing them, and the character they held within them. He defined the difference between the object and reality. He used geometry to subvert the lines of his work, producing something elusive and impossible to put in context. His sculptures occupied a silent and knowing space. The sphere, both three dimensional and in line drawings was a repetitive symbol for him. It represented the sublime and the eternal. We are grateful for his life and draw strength from it as a metaphor to the cycle of life.
Born in Launceston, Cornwall in 1961. Grenville Davey, a significant artist and an educator, won the Turner Prize in 1992 followed by influential group and solo shows both in the UK and internationally. Among numerous commissions he created an installation for the Olympic Park in London and was affiliated with the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge and the Centre for Research in String Theory, Queen Mary University of London. Davey was a professor of the University of the Arts London and programme leader of the MA Fine Art at the University of East London.
