"I have been making work using the grid section since the 1960's. My multi-canvas works from that time were all based around the grid created by multiple small canvases. I have also been influenced by Heraldry both ancient and modern. The essence of heraldry is that it has to be simple in shape and distinctive in colour in order to be instantly recognisable. In 1965 I made two collages 'Army Games' and '25 Divisions' using images of army identification insignia. I have continued to incorporate the principles of heraldry in my paintings from that time forward.
'Plitplov' relies on the checkerboard effect of alternating black and white and the variation and balance of simple shapes and the way colours effect each other when in close proximity."
