Amanda Benson

Overview

Amanda Benson is a sculptor based in Hackney, London, with a broad exhibition history both in the UK and internationally. In addition to her artistic practice, she has had a long-standing involvement in art education.

Central to her work is the belief in the handmade and the transformative potential of everyday materials. Benson’s process is intentionally transparent—she emphasizes the visibility of how each piece is constructed, how it is put together, and how it operates in a given space. Pieces start from sketches or the material itself, and her practice explores the relationship between form, physicality, and colour, with each sculpture evolving from initial ideas or the very materials she works with.

Her work spans a range of scales and media, often using materials such as black annealed wire, straws, fabric, and plaster. These elements are crafted into geometric, repetitive, open forms that teeter on the edge of collapse, yet remain cohesive and playful. The solid counterparts to these linear structures are imbued with colour, weight, and texture, shifting the elements into new forms and dimensions. Through ongoing experimentation and combination, Benson continues to push the boundaries of materiality and sculptural expression.
