We're so pleased to say that the beautiful new gates of The Royal Academy of the West of England, designed by Toni Davey, have now been installed! Make sure to take a look the next time you visit.
The 10ft gates are powder coated, water jet cut aluminium, manufactured by Alec Gannon, a great personal friend of Toni Davey who recently worked on the gates for St Paul's Cathedral, London.
As soon as Davey heard that the RWA were looking to commission an Academician to design the gates, she put herself forward,
" My thought was that I had just completed a design for a property on Exmoor and was very excited by its possibilities, especially the shadows that it cast. Also, I had made a lot of early work in the 1990's related to trees that I felt would work well with the lift shaft design by Peter Randell-Page. "
Davey has kindly shared a selection of images that show her early designs, variations on the chosen design, and the gates themselves, installed outside the RWA in July 2023.
